After a recent trip to Amsterdam I was inspired by oil paints. Thanks to the van Gogh and Rembrandt museums.

A lot of work goes into painting with oil paints but I think oils are a very versatile medium, whether it’s color matching, blending or erasing a mess up (linseed oil). As least now days you won’t have to source dry pigments. I chose to use oil paints to finish my cornhole boards. Be aware that oil paints will take warmth and sun to dry and potentially up to 3 months. Due to this long dry time, if you change your mind you can always go back and change things.

There are lots of steps to building these boards, check out (youtube) for some good howto videos.

For the paint process here are a few steps I used.

  1. Draw your design with a pencil.
  2. Paint with clear gesso, sand after each coat (at least two coats).
  3. Have plenty of a hand cleaner and brush cleaner like Linseed oil or I’ve found fast orange works well.
  4. And of course the Fat-over-lean rule.
